Has anyone seen this movie? This is what I fear the future will be like. Though I'm sure it seems extreme to some, I have to say that I am honestly scared to bring a baby into the world in a country that is moving in this economical direction. I know this is a controversial subject, but one of the things I love about my country is my right to speak or write my opinions about whatever I so choose. Do I think women should be in charge of their own bodies? Sure. Do I think I'm responsible for paying for their birth control or abortions? Not unless they are going to pay for my fertility treatments. Mine is a medical condition. Their's is a choice of responsibility. Do I think there are people that are truly in a bad financial situation and need assistance? Of course. Do I think that this number is going to continue to increase? Yes. Do I think gays should be able to get married? Sure. But none of these things really matter if we can't afford to fund anymore programs, pay our debt to other countries, continue to offer benefits and fair pay to our military members who work far more hours than they are paid fairly for in an often dangerous job, support our schools, etc. Because without money, we are without options and without protection. It isn't about one party being better than the other. It's about America. I don't believe our president wants to see this nation prosper. I'm sad that our media and clueless celebrities have influenced many voters, especially the young ones that are voting for the first time. Everyone has a choice, and I respect that, but this wasn't my choice, and I predict that we will not be in a good situation in 2016. Sadly, I doubt that will help people see the light. They'll need even more help and will be even more stubborn about voting for the things that will benefit themselves. Do I want a baby if he/she will have to grow up in world where people act so selfishly and accuse those who don't agree with them of the same? Do I want my child to inherit an impossible debt and a country in shambles? Do I want to worry about whether I'll be able to provide for a baby in an administration that is forcing military members out and robbing them of their retirement? I feel selfish for still wanting a baby of my own even if it will possibly be a difficult life for him/her....guess it isn't a problem for now, since I'm not lucky enough to make babies on demand (or on accident).
Off topic: How does anyone have a true "accident" baby? I mean other than the condom broke or you messed up on your birth control? If you are having unprotected sex, is it really a surprise pregnancy? Hmmm... I have to admit I was more surprised NOT to get pregnant from having unprotected sex, so all these "accident" babies I hear about are a mystery to me.
So here is my theory on the "accident babies." Most women naturally have a higher sex drive in the couple days surrounding ovulation. Even for women who barely have any sex drive, they may only "want it" those couple days per month and not even understand why. So, they end up having sex at that time, because as anyone well knows, women hold the power when it comes to the where and when of putting out. hehe And with that, they may not use protection (especially married folks) and BAM they end up pregnant.
ReplyDeleteI think this is also a reason we hear, "We only did it one time that month and got pregnant!" It does make sense when you look at it that way, because ovulation causes us to want to have sex and that's when all the other conditions are right too. Obviously, these are people who aren't diagnosed with infertility, but I still think it's possible why it happens so often to people who aren't necessarily trying. I am with you though...still don't think there is such thing as an accident if you aren't trying to prevent in the first place!
The accidental baby thing gets me scratching my head too. I mean, really? You created life as an oops? Although I do remember when that was my biggest fear. As my DH says, if you aren't preventing then you are trying. I am not jealous of these women though, most of them aren't bringing their baby into the kind of life we are. I'm sometimes jealous of their ability to conceive so easily, but that would be about it.
ReplyDeleteAs for politics, I share some of your fears for the future and even concern over what bringing a child into the world means. There absolutely won't be a penny for our social security. In Jan DH and I are meeting with an accountant and we are going to start a serious retirement savings plan because that is all we'll have. I do think with a locked congress, house is R and Senate is D, not much will get passed and so I presume things will mostly stay stagnant with some dips and rises unless there are some changes in congress in two years. My biggest fear is how is the middle class supposed to continue carrying the country when more and more people are falling off of it due to the economic state? Anyways, I could go on and on about politics, which is part of why I screwed myself last night. We got into a huge convo on it and got home too late.
I agree with you both on the oops babies. Seems like people would know it isn't an accident if you didn't prevent, but I wouldn't trade places with most of them.
ReplyDeleteAmber, I totally agree about the middle class carrying the country, and with so many jobs being lost, I don't know how people expect to keep this up. Very scary. I also agree about the probability of things getting stuck with a R house and D Senate, so even though most people think that's a negative, I do feel that at least some of the things that Obama seems to want to do wouldn't make it very far. I am sad that it seems our nation is even more divided. It makes me so angry to hear people call those that don't support Obama racist, and it really gets me when people say that if you don't agree with his policies you are uneducated or don't care about helping people. I know there are some people like that, but I don't think this is the majority of Obama "non-supporters". Anyway, I do wish the country and two primary parties were more open to finding a less extreme outlook and that they'd stop spending so much money on campaigning when our country is in such crappy economical shape.
I agree with both parties getting out of hand. it's funny because if you look at it as most people do, the two parties are wildly different. On the D view point, they are open-minded people who want to help people in this rough time. They are all about fairness, equality, and choice for everyone. From the D viewpoint, R's are rich, greedy, racist, and narrow minded. Anyone who's an R could care less about anyone else in the country. Then you have the R view point, that R's are responsible, hard working, create jobs, want those getting help to truly deserve it and be working on not needing help while receiving it (e.g. teach a man to fish, not give a fish). From the R's viewpoint, D's are lazy, uneducated, and only want a "free ride". Now, I'm talking about extremist viewpoints, not me, you, or other people I've spoken to. This makes me mad because I feel the head of the parties have created this divide. In real honesty, most people want to live in a country with options and jobs. People want to know that hard work will be rewarded. If I am uneducated and employed and I'm sitting down to watch the TV and on the news there's people with PhD's working at McDonald's, then really? Am I going to bust my butt for a job? Why? This is such a desperate time and instead of uniting we are dividing. No matter which "leader" we have (I use this term loosely, 'cause lets be real), nothing can really get done when it's cats and dogs. Everyone mostly wants the same thing with some people disagreeing on what freedoms and choices we should have in regards to social issues. Okay, leaving soapbox. I'm sorry. Can you tell I could honestly spend hours on this stuff?
ReplyDeleteDon't apologize! I agree with everything you said 100%. I know it sounds "ignorant" to some, but I honestly put a lot of stock into a candidates mannerisms and body language. I think all politicians will say what they have to to win votes, and I think at some point, we have to be able to look beyond the "promises". This was a factor for me in this election as well, as "unscientific" or "illogical" as that may sound.
ReplyDeleteGREAT post Farra... we really see eye to on every, single, level. Have you seen the move 2016? It was disturbing but illustrates well a few of the points you made in this post.
ReplyDeleteI have. It was very scary, and even scarier was that people were saying it was one person's "opinion" of Obama. Had they seen the movie, they could have heard Obama reading from his own book. To me, that was stuff that really couldn't be taken out of context. It was pretty clear how he feels about America.
ReplyDeleteWow. Everything you just said is something that has probably come out of my own mouth in the past couple of months. AGREED! I never thought about getting ferility treatments covered, but you are SO right. If we are paying for their birth control, I want in on that action and get some coverage since insurance does NOTHING for infertility! New follower, i will be back!
